In September 2017, the Project Management Institute (PMI) released the sixth edition of “A Guide To The Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK)® Guide” for Project Management Professional. To reflect the newest edition of the PMBOK®, PMI® has updated the PMP® exam. The PMP® exam change to include the new PMBOK® information will go into effect on March 26, 2018.
What Changes?
While exact details of the how the 2018 PMP® exam change will affect the exam preparation is unknown to the public at this time, it is known why PMI® made the changes. With the update to the PMBOK® guide it was necessary to change the exam as well. The new exam will unify the tools, methods, and process groups of the PMBOK® version 6 with the exam. The new exam will also blend the language and phrasing used in the PMBOK® with the exam in order to rectify possible issues of confusion over differing terminology.
Known changes of the PMBOK® that may affect the exam:
- Renamed Knowledge Areas
- Schedule Management – previously Time Management
- Resource Management – previously Human Resource Management
- New project manager role chapter
- Knowledge Areas have new sections
- Concepts
- New project management practices
- Attention to project tailoring
- Applying adaptive or agile environments
What Has Not Changed
While the PMP® exam change will affect the items mentioned above, PMI® has stated that it will not change the PMP® exam content outline. The new exam will reflect the changes to the vocabulary and the addition of the new sections in the PMBOK® 6th edition and evaluate PMP® candidates on the knowledge and skills of the previous exams in the following format:
- Initiating – 11%
- Planning – 23%
- Executing – 26%
- Control & Monitor – 21%
- Closing – 9%
Candidates must still correctly answer at least 61% of the 200 multiple choice questions in order to receive a passing score on the exam. The exam will continue to be administered over a 4-hour period by Prometric authorized test centers.
